The chess board is made from walnut and ash. To minimize the potential for wood movement, thin pieces of end grain squares are glued onto both sides of plywood. The playing area is framed with a curly maple border and a walnut frame. The frame also has curly maple edge banding. The mitered corners of the frame are joined with mortise and tenon joinery, and the frame is attached to the board with a tongue and groove joint with the plywood inserting into a groove in the frame.
The front of the “hidden” drawer resembles a table apron, but the drawer pulls out.
